Each gummy also has 6 calories, 2 g of carbohydrate and 1.5 g of sugar. Other ingredients are cane sugar, glucose syrup, water, pectin, citric acid, sodium citrate, natural flavor, natural coloring and starch.
The traditional tonics
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia), 200 mg
A tall shrub from Malaysia and Indonesia whose root is brewed as a tonic. Human studies, mostly small, report modest improvements in libido and lower stress hormone levels in stressed adults at 200 to 400 mg a day. A clear rise in testosterone in healthy men has not been established. Long-term safety data are limited.
Maca root (Lepidium meyenii), 100 mg
A root vegetable from the high Andes, related to radish and turnip. Small trials at 1.5 to 3 g a day suggest modest effects on libido, mood and energy. The amount in a gummy is a small fraction of that.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), 100 mg
One of the best-known herbs in Ayurveda. Research finds benefits for stress and sleep, mostly at 300 to 600 mg a day of standardized root extract. It can cause drowsiness or stomach upset and may affect thyroid hormone levels.
Horny goat weed (Epimedium sagittatum), 100 mg
Known in Chinese medicine as yin yang huo. Its active compound, icariin, has been studied mainly in the laboratory; human evidence is largely traditional. It should not be combined with nitrates or erectile dysfunction medication.
The circulation support
L-Arginine HCl, 50 mg
An amino acid the body uses to make nitric oxide. Studies on blood flow typically use 2.5 to 5 g a day, so the amount here is small and plays a supporting role.
Beet root (Beta vulgaris), 50 mg
Beets are rich in dietary nitrate, which the body can also turn into nitric oxide. Research usually uses juice or spoonfuls of powder. Beet root can harmlessly colour urine or stool red.
Grape seed (Vitis vinifera), 50 mg
A source of proanthocyanidins, antioxidant compounds studied for their effect on blood vessels and blood pressure. It is generally well tolerated.
How the ingredients fit together
Tongkat ali is the lead ingredient, present at a studied dose. The rest work as a supporting cast at lower amounts. That makes JellyBoost a gentle daily formula more than a high-dose one.
